SOUND
SOLO RECORDINGS
Joel Alden Kingston has been singing from about the time he took his first steps and began writing songs while walking to and from school.
|
By age twelve he'd joined a theater group performing variety shows at local arenas and fairs and in his high school years he was premier percussionist in both the concert and jazz bands, which toured and competed in the Pacific Northwest. |
In 1993 Kingston opened his own studio, primarily to make recordings of his band, but he soon began experimenting with ambient sound,
creating lengthy adventures in audio. |
Kingston grew up in a family of inventors and industrial machinists. His father, a theater lighting designer,
built most of his own equipment, while his grandfather built his own diamond saws and polishing machines to work precious stones.
The family ethos being - Build it yourself and you'll get exactly what you need. |
When Kingston added digital drums to his kit he fabricated twelve pads out of oak, covered in gum rubber. Arranging them into a tight piano octave configuration, triggering drum samples and other sounds by setting up velocity sensitive thresholds. This way a soft hit will activate one sample and a greater impact will create a completely different set of tones. |
|
Kingston was lead vocalist and percussionist for Alien Gin, as well as graphic designer and arranger/producer of most of their recordings. |
Recording every Alien Gin practice session, Kingston would then edit and arrange the recordings into songs, adding his vocals, harmonica, keyboards and other sounds and effects. With "Evil as a Train" the inspiration came from a short guitar riff that was being cut from another song. Once Kingston heard it he knew he had something and built the song up from there. |

mas facter
mas facter is Kingston's latest musical collaboration. Guitarist Tim Kingston was hanging out K2 Audio one day and began playing the main theme for "Critical Mas". The system was quickly fired up and recording began, routing the signal through effects and then adding keyboard as recording continued. Later the tracks were cut into this arrangement, adding a telephone message from Tim for the intro and coda. |
